About:

The Reference Document

All the documents mentioned in the esp@cenet result list will have a reference document.

Definition:

The reference document is the representative document of the patent family to which the mentioned document belongs. It is most often a document in English.

The link between a document and its reference document is established via a table of correspondence, which updated every week.

Note:

Some temporary discrepancies can occur, because the table of correspondence is not updated with the database itself.

Criteria:

Which criteria are used for choosing a reference document?

For the choice of the reference document in English, the European Patent Office applies following criteria:

  1. first the EP document in English
  2. then the first US document published
  3. the the first GB document published
  4. etc.

If a document present in the bibliographic database still doesn't have a reference document in English after a month, the translation of the title and abstract is organized by the EPO, assuming this document belongs to the minimum PCT documentation.

Otherwise, the document will remain in its original language in the bibliographic database.
