| Every Search Form contains a number of input fields corresponding to the type of data that can be searched.
The name of every input field is displayed at the left of the input field. It corresponds to the type of patent information which can be searched by using this input field.
An illustrative example of the type of information can be found at the right of every entry field.
By using the different types of input fields, a more accurate search can be carried out, since terms such as the name of an inventor will only be searched amongst the inventor names, and not in the title of a document, for example.
It is possible to enter one or more terms in each of the fields (up to a limit of five terms for a Category 1 search, and two terms for a Category 2 search).
If more than one term is entered, the terms will be combined according to the rules given below:
For the fields Publication Number and Application Number, if more than one term is entered, an OR operator will be applied.
For all other fields, an AND operator will be applied.
Explicit use of Boolean operators in any field will overide these defaults.
If criteria are entered in more than one input field, these will be subject to an AND combination.
When searching in the date field, it is only possible to search with a single term.
Once all the criteria have been entered (and where applicable the country selection ha been made), select the Search Button to submit the search.
